How to Convert M2TS to MKV with Freeware

Problem

M2TS is a Sony high definition video file type. M2TS files are raw AVCHD videos recorded using Sony's camcorders, such as the HDR-SR1 and HDR-SR5 models. However, this format cannot be usually played on your computer or portable players. So firstly you need convert the format to the common video formats such as MKV, AVI, etc.

Solution

Download Any Video Converter and install it in your computer.
Launch Any Video Converter after installation.
Navigate to "File" -> "Add Video Files...".

Locate your M2TS file and add it to Any Video Converter. You may see it's listed in the window when it's done.

Click the drop-down button on the upper right of the window. Select "Matroska Video (*.mkv).

After your selection, you may find "General", "Output Duration", Video Options" and "Audio Options". Choose a frame size according to your need. If you want to convert between PAL and NTSC, change the FPS, or the default Fps value is enough for a better quality. The higher the bitrate is, the better quality you will get, but of course the output file size will be lager. Otherwise, audio bitrate won't be able to match the video bitrate of an HD movie, so to prevent the sync problem, leave it default.

When it's done, go to "File" -> "Open Output Folder". You can also customize output folder. Just click "Set Output Folder" and select a desired folder.
